Child-proof the walls, not just the floor.

Published 3 July 2026

Most homes pad the floor and forget the walls, yet a hard concrete or tiled wall is exactly what a running toddler collides with. Cladding walls in soft artificial grass turns an unforgiving surface into a cushioned one, and it works for floors and play corners too.

Child-proofing usually means corner guards and cupboard latches, but the two biggest hard surfaces in any room, the floor and the walls, are the ones children actually run into. One of our clients asked us to line their play area's walls in artificial grass instead of leaving bare concrete. The result is a soft, forgiving surface on every side, and it looks a world away from foam padding.

Why grass on the walls beats bare concrete

Padding the floor is common. Padding the walls is what most people miss, and it is exactly where an active child gets hurt.

Concrete and tiled walls are unforgiving. A child chasing a ball or losing balance meets a hard, square edge. Grass cladding over a thin backing softens that contact and takes the sting out of a knock.

It looks and feels better than foam. Rubber mats and foam guards shout “nursery.” Artificial grass reads as a clean, green feature wall while doing the same protective job, so parents actually keep it up.

One material, floor to wall. The same premium turf wraps from the ground up the wall for a seamless, wipe-clean surface, with no gaps, grout lines or hard transitions for small hands to pick at.

Floors and walls, both made safe

The same build-up that cushions the ground can wrap up the walls too. Here is how it compares with the hard surfaces it replaces.

Bare walls & hard floor

  • Walls: hard concrete and tiled edges to hit
  • Falls: no cushioning on tile or concrete
  • Mud: slippery and messy after rain
  • Uneven: dips and roots trip small feet
  • Look: foam padding looks institutional

  • Cushioned floor: shockpad absorbs falls
  • No mud: usable minutes after rain

  • Looks good: a clean green feature, not foam

Walls are softened. Grass clads straight onto concrete or plaster over a thin backing, so a running child meets a giving surface instead of a hard edge, ideal along the sides of a play corner or a narrow HDB balcony.

Falls are cushioned. Add a rubber shockpad beneath the floor turf and the surface has a tested Critical Fall Height, so a tumble from a slide or climbing frame is absorbed instead of met by hard ground. It's the same system we install in childcare playgrounds.

No more mud. Water drains straight through, so there's no slippery, muddy patch and nothing tracked back indoors, whatever the weather.

Nothing toxic. No weedkiller, fertiliser or pesticide, and no soil to harbour ants, fleas or ticks. Just a clean surface that rinses down in seconds.

Soft floor, soft walls, chemical-free and clean, the kind of space you can let a toddler loose in without hovering.

Is it actually safe? What EN 71-3 means

Safety comes down to the grade of grass, on the floor and on the wall. Premium Namgrass is certified to EN 71-3, the European standard that limits the migration of heavy metals such as lead, the very same chemical-safety test applied to children's toys. In short, it's built to be safe for children to touch, mouth and play on.

Where cushioning matters most, under play equipment and along the walls kids run into, the build-up is specified for the job: a shockpad underlay on the floor to the equipment's fall height, and a grass-clad backing up the wall. Cheap turf laid straight onto a hard slab, or a bare painted wall, gives none of this, which is exactly why the grade and the build-up matter.

Perfect for balconies and small play corners

You don't need a garden. Artificial grass lays over a concrete balcony, a roof terrace or a hard play corner and runs straight up the surrounding walls, turning an unforgiving box of concrete into a soft, safe zone, with a shockpad added underfoot wherever you want extra give. For HDB and condo families, wrapping the floor and the walls is one of the simplest ways to make a hard outdoor space genuinely child-friendly.

A softer place for them to play, floor and walls.

We supply and install EN 71-3 premium Namgrass, cladding walls and laying floors with shockpad underlay where cushioning matters, for gardens, balconies and play corners. See the grass, or get an exact quote for your space.

FAQ

Can you put artificial grass on walls for child-proofing?
Yes. Grass clads onto concrete or plaster walls over a thin backing, softening the hard edges a running child collides with. It looks like a clean green feature wall rather than foam padding, and pairs with a cushioned grass floor for an all-round safe play corner.
Is artificial grass safe for children?
Yes. Premium Namgrass is EN 71-3 toy-safe and lead-free, the same chemical-safety standard used for children's toys. It's non-toxic, needs no pesticides or weedkiller, and drains freely so there's no standing water.
Does artificial grass cushion falls?
With a shockpad underlay it does. A rubber shockpad beneath the turf gives a tested Critical Fall Height, so a tumble from play equipment is absorbed rather than met by hard ground.
Is artificial grass cleaner than a natural lawn for kids?
Much cleaner. There's no mud to track indoors, and no soil bed to harbour ants, fleas or ticks. The surface rinses clean with a hose and stays usable minutes after rain.
Can it be installed on a balcony or hard floor for kids?
Yes. It lays over concrete, tiles or a balcony slab with free-draining backing, turning a hard, unforgiving surface into a soft play area, with a shockpad added where extra cushioning is wanted.
How does the grass attach to a wall?
The grass is fixed to the wall with an exterior-grade adhesive and mechanical fixings where needed, over a clean concrete or plaster surface. Seams are matched for pile direction so the finished wall reads as one continuous run of green.
Will grass on a wall fade in the sun?
Premium Namgrass is UV-stabilised for our climate, so a wall in full sun holds its colour for years. It's the same yarn we install outdoors on rooftops and poolsides in Singapore.
Does a grass wall need any maintenance?
Barely any. Unlike a living green wall there's no watering, trimming or feeding, an occasional wipe or hose-down keeps it clean. That's a big part of why families choose it for a play corner.

A softer home for them to grow up in.
