Why cheap artificial grass costs more over time.
Published 1 July 2026
A low price tag is tempting, but with artificial grass, the cheapest option is almost always the most expensive one in the end. Here's what really happens after the bargain is laid.
Two lawns can look identical on day one. Three years later, one still looks brand new and the other is faded, flat and patchy, already due for replacement. The difference isn't luck. It's what went into the turf, the base and the installation.

The hidden cost of "cheap"
Budget artificial grass cuts corners where you can't see them, and Singapore's climate finds every one of them fast.
Fading fibres. Cheap yarn isn't properly UV-stabilised, so the relentless tropical sun bleaches it from green to a dull, yellowish grey within a couple of years.
Flattening pile. Low-grade fibres lose their spring and lie flat under foot traffic, leaving worn tracks that never stand back up.
Weak backing. Thin backing and poor tuft-lock mean fibres shed and seams lift, and without proper drainage, water pools, smells and breeds mosquitoes.
Safety unknowns. Uncertified imports may contain lead or harmful chemicals, with none of the EN 71-3 toy-safety testing premium turf carries.

See it for yourself. Poor tuft-lock is the giveaway. On cheap turf the fibres aren't properly locked into the backing, so a light tug pulls whole tufts of yarn straight out. On premium Namgrass, with its heavy-duty backing and secure tuft-lock, the same pull does nothing — our pile can withstand up to 300 kg of pulling force before breakage.
Cheap grass: the yarn lifts out with a simple pull. Quality turf holds fast.
Cheap vs. premium, over ten years
Spread across its real lifespan, quality turf isn't the expensive choice, it's the economical one.
Cheap grass
- Year 0: low upfront price
- Year 2-3: fading, flattening, seams lifting
- Year 3-4: remove & dispose of failed turf
- + Replace: pay for new grass & install again
- Result: two (or three) bills in ten years
Premium Namgrass
- Year 0: higher upfront, done once
- Year 2-15: still lush, green and springy
- Warranty: 10-year cover on colour & UV
- Lifespan: 15-20 years with light care
- Result: one bill, lower cost per year
Premium Namgrass vs. cheap imported turf
Underneath a matching first-day look, the same eight things decide whether a lawn lasts or fails. Here they are side by side.
| What matters | Premium Namgrass | Cheap imported turf |
|---|---|---|
| UV & colour stability | Colour-fast yarn, UV-stabilised for the tropical sun | Not UV-rated, fades to grey-yellow in 1–2 years |
| Safety certification | EN 71-3 lead-free, toy-safety tested | Uncertified imports may contain lead |
| Backing & tuft-lock | Heavy-duty backing, fibres locked in | Thin backing, fibres shed and seams lift |
| Drainage | Drainage-led base built for monsoon rain | Water pools, smells and breeds mosquitoes |
| Installation | One accountable in-house team, no subcontractors | Often supply-only or subcontracted labour |
| Warranty | 10-year cover on colour & UV | None, or a token warranty that excludes fading |
| Real lifespan | 15–20 years with light care | 2–4 years before it looks tired |
| Cost over 10 years | One bill, lower cost per year | Two or three bills, plus removal & disposal |
Premium turf wins on every line that matters after day one, which is why the cheaper lawn ends up costing more.
What you're really paying for with premium
The extra upfront isn't margin, it's the things that make a lawn last: UV-stable, lead-free Namgrass yarn; a heavy-duty backing with proper tuft-lock; a drainage-led base built for monsoon rain; and skilled installation backed by a 10-year warranty.
How to avoid the cheap-grass trap
Ask three questions before you buy: Is the yarn UV-stabilised and safety-certified? What warranty comes with it, and does it cover colour? Who prepares the base and drainage? If a quote can't answer these clearly, the low price is hiding a short lifespan.
