Is artificial grass recyclable?

Artificial grass is plastic, so the fair question is what happens to it at the end of its life. The reassuring part: modern turf is designed to be recycled, and the greenest options are made specifically so they can be. The catch is that not all grass is equal, and the difference is hidden underneath, in the backing that holds the fibres.

Why the backing decides recyclability

A blade of artificial grass is only the visible half. Underneath sit the backing layers that lock every fibre in place. Traditional turf combines several different plastics in those layers, and mixed plastics are hard to separate, so old turf often gets downcycled into lower-grade material rather than genuinely recycled.

The fix is to simplify the recipe. When the whole product is effectively one material, it can go through a clean, circular recycling process and come back as useful material of similar value. That single idea is what separates “technically recyclable” from “actually recycled”.

Three backings, three levels of green

Latex backing. The industry standard for strength, it locks fibres in tightly and stands up to heavy traffic, and it still makes up the large majority of the market. Premium latex is GuT-regulated, meaning low-emission and non-toxic, but its mix of materials makes it the hardest of the three to recycle.

PE (polyethylene) backing. A step forward: strong and stable, but fully recyclable, so it suits eco-conscious homes and projects that care what happens at the end of the lawn’s life.

ONE-DNA™ mono-material backing. The most sustainable option, made from a single polymer so the entire product is built for true circular recycling. Instead of being downcycled, it can be recycled more efficiently and reused at a higher value, closing the loop properly.

Sustainability is more than the end of life

Recyclability is one chapter; the years in between matter just as much. Over a decade of use, a synthetic lawn in Singapore saves water in a climate where irrigation is constant, needs no mowing and therefore no petrol or electricity, and puts no fertiliser or pesticide run-off into drains. Set against a natural lawn’s upkeep, that adds up.

The single biggest lever, though, is lifespan. A premium lawn that stays good for 10 to 15 years and is recyclable at the end has a far smaller footprint than cheap turf that fades, hardens and gets torn out every few years. Buying well once is the most sustainable choice you can make, which is the same reason cheap grass usually costs more.

Is the plastic safe in the meantime?

For premium turf, yes. Regulated GuT latex is low-emission, non-toxic and tested to be safe for children, pets and planting nearby. Unbranded bargain turf carries no such guarantee, one more reason to know exactly what is going down in your garden.

What happens to your lawn at the end

When a lawn is eventually replaced, it doesn’t have to go to the bin. Turf is lifted in rolls, and where it is a recyclable or mono-material product it can be sent for recycling rather than dumped. Choosing a recyclable backing today is what makes that possible in ten years’ time, so the greenest decision is made on the day you buy, not the day you remove it.
