The lawn bill nobody adds up

A natural lawn looks free once it's in. It isn't.

In Singapore's climate, keeping real grass green means watering it hard, week after week, all year. A maintained lawn drinks on the order of a thousand litres per square metre a year, and every litre is metered at the PUB rate. Add the mowing, the fertiliser, the weeding and the labour, and a modest garden quietly costs hundreds of dollars a year just to stay presentable.

Artificial grass has effectively none of these ongoing emissions, so every year it stays down is carbon avoided, the same way a stand of trees quietly absorbs it.

That's the "trees" and "car kilometres" figures in the calculator: everyday equivalents for the operational carbon you stop emitting once the mower goes in the shed for good.

These savings only hold if the turf holds. Cheap grass fades and flattens within a few years, so you pay to remove and replace it, and the savings clock resets.
