Artificial grass vs natural grass.

Published 14 July 2026

Natural turf struggles in our climate, patchy in shade, muddy in the monsoon, scorched in the sun. Here is how artificial grass compares, honestly, for Singapore conditions.

Both have their place. But in Singapore’s heat, humidity and heavy rain, the trade-offs line up very differently than they would in a temperate garden.

Lush premium artificial grass lawn staying green year-round in a Singapore garden

Year-round appearance

Natural grass in Singapore rarely stays even, shade, foot traffic and waterlogging leave bald and muddy patches. Premium artificial grass stays uniformly green and lush every day of the year, indoors or out.

Maintenance

Real turf needs mowing, watering, fertilising, weeding and re-seeding, relentless in a growing season that never stops here. Artificial grass needs only a light brush and the occasional rinse.

Drainage and rain

A natural lawn turns to mud after a downpour and can take a day to recover. A properly built artificial lawn drains through its base in seconds and is usable again almost immediately.

Heat

This is natural grass’s one genuine edge: living turf stays cooler underfoot. Artificial grass warms in direct sun, though a quick rinse cools it, and shade or lighter-coloured yarn helps. In practice most of our lawns see plenty of shade and daily use.

Pets and children

No mud tracked indoors, no pesticides or fertiliser residues, and a soft, EN 71-3 toy-safe surface. Waste lifts off and rinses clean through the drainage base.

Cost over time

Natural grass is cheaper to lay but costs every month in water, mowing and re-turfing failed patches. Premium artificial grass is a higher one-off cost that then runs for 15–20 years with almost no upkeep.

In a tropical climate the maths flips: the “free” lawn is the one you keep paying for.

So which should you choose?

If you want a flawless, low-effort, all-weather lawn that survives Singapore’s climate, artificial grass wins on nearly every count. If a cooler living surface and you enjoy the upkeep, natural turf still has a place, in the right, well-drained, sunny spot.

FAQ

Is artificial grass better than real grass in Singapore?
For most Singapore gardens, yes, it stays green year-round, drains fast after rain, and needs almost no upkeep, where natural turf tends to go patchy and muddy.
Does artificial grass get hot in the sun?
It warms in direct sun, more than living grass. A quick rinse cools it, and shade or lighter yarn helps; in daily use with some shade it stays comfortable.
Is artificial grass cheaper than natural grass?
It costs more to install but far less to own, no watering, mowing or re-turfing, so over 15–20 years it usually works out cheaper than maintaining a real lawn.
Is artificial grass safe for pets and kids?
Yes, premium Namgrass is lead-free and EN 71-3 toy-safe, with no pesticides or fertiliser, and waste rinses away through the drainage base.
