One of the biggest projects we've ever delivered: the FIFA 2-Star certified football pitch at Jalan Besar Stadium, laid for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games and inspected by FIFA itself. This is how the surface is installed the professional way, the full process, from the first roll of turf to a live game on national TV.

The story

Singapore's birthplace of football, reborn.

Jalan Besar Stadium is woven into Singapore's history, first built in 1932, rebuilt and reopened in 2003, and long known as the country's "birthplace of football." In 2008 the pitch was relaid with a higher-grade artificial surface under FIFA's GOAL programme, making it the first-ever FIFA-approved third-generation Football Turf in Singapore, and a regular venue for nationally televised S.League matches.

Two years later it earned its place in Olympic history: on 12 August 2010, the inaugural Youth Olympic Games kicked off here with its very first match, a distinction shared with only a handful of Olympic venues before it.

The surface itself was engineered for true playability. Its V-shaped fibre, built with a spine along each blade like real grass, keeps the pile standing upright and lets the ball sit, roll and bounce naturally, giving players a comfortable kick, familiar bounce and a slide-friendly surface that feels like natural turf underfoot.

As the new turf was being laid, Singapore football blog BoLASEPaKO.com visited the site and spoke with ibuild sportscape director Wong Chee Hoong, who described a weather-proof surface with blades sculpted to feel like real grass, right down to a backbone along each fibre. The report noted that this was the first 2-Star FIFA rating of its kind in Asia, clearing the pitch for international matches — read the original coverage.
