A brief history of artificial turf in sport.

Published 14 July 2026

Artificial turf was born on the sports field, and its story runs from a domed Texas stadium to the FIFA-certified pitches we lay today. As a sportscape company, it’s a history close to home.

The grass in your garden owes everything to sport. Every leap in durability, safety and realism was driven by the demands of the playing field.

FIFA-standard artificial sports turf pitch, the modern result of decades of turf innovation

The 1960s: grass that wouldn’t grow indoors

The first synthetic turf, “ChemGrass,” was created to solve a very specific problem: natural grass would not grow inside the roofed Houston Astrodome. Re-branded “AstroTurf” after its 1966 debut there, it launched an industry.

The 1970s–80s: the hard first generation

Early turf was essentially short pile on concrete, durable and low-maintenance, but hard, abrasive and unforgiving on players’ joints. It spread through stadiums even as athletes pushed back on the injuries it caused.

The 1990s–2000s: infill changes everything

The “third generation” (3G) system, longer fibres with a rubber-and-sand infill, transformed playability. The surface finally behaved more like real grass: softer landings, natural ball roll and a realistic bounce.

Today: FIFA-certified performance

Modern pitches are tested to strict standards for shock absorption, ball behaviour and player safety. FIFA’s Quality programme (the 1-Star and 2-Star ratings) certifies fields fit for competitive and international play.

Artificial turf in Singapore

That lineage reached Singapore in our own work: ibuild laid the FIFA 2-Star certified pitch at Jalan Besar Stadium, tested by FIFA Sportslab and delivered for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, the first rating of its kind in the region.

Every advance in artificial grass, softer, safer, more realistic, was won on the sports field first.

From the pitch to your garden

The same fibre science and drainage engineering that make a stadium pitch play true are what make a modern garden lawn look and feel natural. Sport drove the innovation; homes now enjoy the result.

FAQ

When was artificial turf invented?
The first synthetic turf, ChemGrass, appeared in the mid-1960s and became famous as “AstroTurf” after debuting in the Houston Astrodome in 1966.
What is the difference between AstroTurf and modern artificial grass?
AstroTurf was a hard, short first-generation surface. Modern grass uses longer, softer fibres and infill for a natural feel, roll and bounce, far removed from the original.
What is a FIFA-certified pitch?
A pitch tested to FIFA’s quality standards for shock absorption, ball behaviour and safety, earning a 1-Star or 2-Star rating for competitive or international play.
Has ibuild built a FIFA-standard pitch?
Yes, ibuild laid the FIFA 2-Star certified pitch at Jalan Besar Stadium, tested by FIFA Sportslab and delivered for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
